How do you find someone??

Does anyone ever find someone using a site like this? There must be other ways to try. Are there any sites that are just to find people in Japan? Are there any professional companies to locate people? With so many similer names in Japan, do the Japanese people have a number like a social security number such as in the U.S. ? I would really like to find out about an old friend and how she is doing; But I would not want to cause her any problems by digging up a long ago relationship. If anyone has any ideas on how to locate an old friend that won't cost a fortune, please let me know.
