Hi everyone,
I was wondering what the grammar point 思うようになりました in this sentence is portraying.

ほしさんは東日本大震災のあと、法律の専門家になりた いと思うようになりました

Is ように in this translation "to Wish"?

My interpretation is

After the great east japan earth quake hoshi wished to become a law specialist (which i take is a lawyer)

Is the literal meaning of になりたいと思うようになりました thought he would wish to become a lawyer?

よろしくお願いします

ようになる means to change into a certain state. It really doesn't add much to the English translation but literally it means after the earth quake, hoshi has come to the (mental) state where he thinks he wants to be a lawyer.

The ようになる emphasizes the fact it is a change of mind based on the earthquake. Not directly translatable into English. ようになる does not mean wish. なりたい is the keyword.

長年の努力の果てに、やっと日本語がうまく話せるようになりました。

After many years of hard work, I can finally speak Japanese well.

The nuance here is the transition aspect which is what ようになる is trying to express.
