I'm reading a fantasy book and this sentence cropped up:

実直な農民で人望のあつい兄とのあいだには、深い溝がある。

So to me this looks something like:

The difference between an honest farmer and his popular/able to be relied upon/solid brother was great.

First is that correct and second, what is that actually supposed to mean? Is there some hidden meaning I'm not understanding? Is he dissing his brother for not being honest, while praising him for being 人望のあつい or maybe something like saying he's not simple like an honest farmer?

Not a "difference" between them (as in a comparison of their characters) but a chasm between them (in terms of their relationship with each other). And everything before 兄 in that sentence is describing 兄, by the way.

Ooooh. That was stupid. I see now. So he's saying:

There is a great chasm between himself and his brother who is an honest farmer and a dependable person.

Those particles just sometimes trip me up and I end up making stuff up.

Thanks a bunch.

When 実直な農民で is a description about the topic person, not 兄, a comma is usually put after it.
cf.
彼は実直な農民で人望のあつい兄とのあいだには、深い溝がある。
