All you need is a bachelor's degree in any subject (if you're a native speaker of English).

More education almost always means a better job. With a masters, you should be able to land a University teaching job. I have a TEFL/TESOL certificate. At most schools, this is a 12 credit post bachaluareat "degree". There is such a thing as an advanced certificate that is equivalent in hours to a masters, and will have the same value outside the U.S. as a masters. Within the U.S., the advanced certificate would only be valid at private institutions--not public schools.

Most people hiring are not going to care that much about your undergrad studies (if it is an entry level position, ie: NOVA, Geos, Aeon, etc.). If you have a passion for Nuclear Physics and are worried about how this will effect your job prospects in regards to teaching English, shoot for the entry level position and build yourself up on whatever experience you gain from that job.

If you teach private lessons in cafes with companies like 7act, Esquare, Findateacher, etc. (please check our directory), you won't need any degree or qualifications, except being a native speaker and holding a visa that allow you to work (that is the hardest part if you aren't already in Japan with such as visa).

Maciamo; I was going to write this in a private message but I do think everyone has a right to know, your working visa info is wrong.

You can obtain a working visa in Japan without a uni degree, all you need to do is prove that you have been working in a similar type of job for over three years to obtain a 1 year visa, you may renew this with permission of your local ward.

(speaking from experience)

Since when do local wards have anything to do with visa extensions? I have always been under the impression that the 入国管理局 handled that.

(speaking from experience too)

Gaijin card is just ID, it is not connected to your visa (stay for over 3 months and you must register, otherwise they get shirty at the airport on the way out, this applies even if you are a tourist).

I've just spent half an hour looking at the offical site and nowhere does it say that working visa's of the instructor subclass have a 3 years experience clause.
