I lived in Tokyo for a short time back in '95.
Beleive it or not, I was able to get an English teaching job paying equivelant to $40/hour with no college degree...managed to do it by moving into a Gaijin house and waiting for one of my fellow English speakers to be too hung-over to make it to class the next day. The students very much liked me and I was competent enough that I was offered a job.
Bet that doesn't happen much in this day, eh?
BTW, does the infamous "Teacher's Lodge" (formerly the Maharaja Palace) in Ishikawa-dai still exist?
Times have changed there, I would bet...sure would like to get back some day.
