I couldn't get the proper spelling of his name.
A former free-style wrestler from the Georgia Republic, he now competes in the top division of Japanese professional Sumo under the ring name "Kokkai" (Black Sea). So far, he has a winning record of 6 and 4 in the current 15-day Tournament. There is also a wrestler from the Czech Republic who is coming up the ranks.

If NFL linemen ever take an interest in sumo... watch out.

They would never be able to handle the strict and disciplined lifestyle in a Sumo stable, especially at the apprentice stage where they only get room and board plus a small allowance. Scouts can't even get Japanese boys to enter Sumo anymore.

There are getting to be a lot of recruits in Japanese Sumo from places like Mongolia, Russia and the eastern Europe because they are willing to put up with the harsh treatment.

But it wouldn't be a bad idea for someone to start a pro Sumo circuit in the U.S. since there are already people here who compete as amateurs.

They'd hafta find a better alternative than a loin cloth with the butt cheeks hanging out, though.

:D

Like the boy sapp off of tampa bay!!!! he's going to take off one of those sumo wrestlers heads off!!!

In terms of pure Sumo, you put Sapp in there with 350-lbs. Takanohana (at his prime), and Taka would win 20 out of 20.

Damn!

I saw him on TV two days ago, he looked like he was doing well.

My favorite has always been Asashoryu, (sp?) the fiesty Mongolian!

Oh yeah, I don't think any lineman could just step into sumo and win. It would take time to aquire the skills. But NFL caliber quickness and muscle mass would be a big advantage.

That's awesome!

Once more ex-football players take part in this...America will become a sumo hotbed! Then again, I may be getting ahead of myself, since there needs to be a widespread appreciation/following for the sport first out here in the States. 👏

Btw, Kokkai's real name is Tsaguria Merab Levan. Courtesy of Banzuke.com.

Football players are idiots. I don't think meat heads would do very well in sumo.
