A couple weeks ago, I rented a car and went to Hakone with my family. It was one of the best experiences of my life as we were able to see Mt. Fuji across the lake and also experiencing a ryokan (traditional Japanese inn). Unfortunately, we weren't able to visit Owakudani (you can try the black eggs) because we went there too late but that would def be a part of my list if I were to add anything else to my list.
This is what I recommend:
1. Amazake-chaya (Teahouse)
2. Lake Ashinoko
3. Tokaido (Checkpoint)
4. Sengokuhara (Pampas grass field)
5. Ryokan (Traditional Japanese Inn w/ hot spring)
6. Hakone Shrine
7. Heiwa no Torii (Peace Gate)
