I've been running my PC for 4 years now without Virus protection, Firewall Etc.. I do have a good ad blocker but nothing to prevent spam. So far I have not had a problem! Am I doomed & overdue, or after 4 years of non-violation can I go on naked as usual? Have you any horror
stories of agressive rape & pillage of your harddrive;or are you still a virgin??

I've had a 4 year old computer (on dial-up for first three years) without virus protection, firewall, adware remover, and worked just fine. When I did finally get a virus scanner, it detected a few small viruses and removed them, and when I did get an adremover, there were TONS of them. It would probably have been worst if I had broadband connection for those years. Hard Drive works just fine also, even with all the Win98 crashes.
I don't really use that computer now though, and I do use virus programs, firewalls, etc. since I'm on DSL.

it depends on what OS youre using, as i beleive you are far less likely to pick something up with win 98 nowadays. i now use etrust antivirus and wouldnt want to be without it. also i keep a firewall, even though im on dial-up again it seems everytime i take it down i get the damn blaster worm, i even patched my system against, but i still get it so feh...

though when i cleaned up my moms computer after several years of use with no firewall, antivirus or ad/spyware removers it had more than 5700 infected files on it. granted alot of that was ad/spyware there were a surprising amount of trojans and things on there too.

XP user here; I had to jack it up with Norton. That Netsky spoof worm is starting to be a bit of an annoyance... :auch:

I never used any protection. I run adaware and Spybot Search & Destroy every now and then, but that's it.
I suppose it's just a matter of not opening suspect attachements and keeping your system patched up.

I do own a wireless-router since a few months and it has a build in firewall. You don't wanna know what's in the logfiles. Portscans, TCP-Syncfloods etc. ocurring allmost every minute. Even without a firewall those are harmless though, as long as your system is patched up.

Ah, I feel so safe from the world with my Norton armed Japanese version of XP... For years I didn't have anything on my computer, but one year on the network at university solved that problem right away. Since the start of 2004 I have detected and erased about 3 viruses, blocked two intrusion attempts (and contacted the attackers ISP and had thier service pulled - Norton's log is very handy for this and ISP like to be tough on hackers these days), and taken care of a few trojans. This is on a 64kbps dial up. God knows what would happen on a cable/network. I also feel better about my (unnamed) P2P program having Norton too.

With Norton, I have forgotten what a pop-up is and after that mailing worm in late 2003, vauge, I know, have gotten almost 0 spam. That alone is worth it to me. Really it is more for peace of mind. I don't like people messing with my stuff. I can ruin my computer just fine without any help :)

I got hit with the blaster worm also on my laptop and the University just instantly blocked my laptop from their wireless network. But I removed it.
I haven't figured out how to look at my wireless router logs. I should find out and see what kind of stuff I'm getting.
That reminds me, I once accidently clicked "yes" to one of those pop ups "do you want to install so-and-so," so I got this spyware installed on to my computer. I managed to remove it with ad-aware. Later I checked my firewall software logs and I found that program trying to connect to the net like 200 times within five minutes. Luckily, all attempts were denied.

I use Norton, but lately, it's just decided to quit working. I try to scan, but the window just disseapears after only checking 10 files. 😭 (And, mind you, I have about 10,000 files.)

Question: Does anyone know if there is a virus that could effectively crash Norton (or any other virus program for that matter?) Because, the same 'dissaperance' of the windows happens for all of my programs. (Really, really aggravating when it decides to do that to word. :auch: All I do is shrink the window and it's gone!!) Or, maybe this is just XP?

GO TO THE NORTON WEB SITE & HAVE IT DO A ...

free check of your system. I just did it today. It should check your system with or without the program.

Frank

There are viruses that deactivates Norton before executing. Though I don't know if it crashes Norton.

Here's a very good (and free) anti-virus program. You'll probably need no other.
AVG 2021 | FREE Antivirus & TuneUp for PC, Mac, Android
Updates are posted very quick. Highly recommended program. No fancy stuff. But screw Norton Anti-virus and their definition subscription.

yeah norton sucks i woudnt use it on my system, eTrust is alot better. yeah ya have to pay but it was $10 for a year when i first signed up, and its still worth it. it has regular updates plus real time protection, hell it even detects and fixes things on other computers that are on your network.

We Are Fortunate On This Forum To Have....

some really smart computer people willing to help others!!

Another highly recommeded program is Lavasoft's Ad-aware (also free):
http://lavasoft.element5.com/support/download/
Which checks for spyware and adwares on your computer. If this is your first spyware checking program, you'll be surprised what you may find. There are also free definition updates often to make sure the latest spyware can be spotted.

I use Kaspersky, best Anti-Virus in the world! (imho) I did a lot of experimenting with "Viruses" and "Trojan-Horse" making them detectable and undetectable by scrambling the upx header and hex editing and doing all that, when i would do that and scan with Norton, wouldn't find it, scan with McaFee, wouldn't find it, Kaspersky found it every time, give it a chance, although not the most visually impressive thing out there, best firewall would be Agnitum again imho... www.agnitum.com

I have never used any protection, and will continue.. No extra money to waste for an AV program.

On my old computer I never had a anti-virus program.
Once I installed it, it found 2300 infected files.
I never even noticed anything.

Well, let me tell you this analogy about some guy. Let's name him... uh... Franz :D
"I've been doing it with my girlfriend for 4 years now without protection (condoms, the pill etc.). I do pull it out shortly before I come, but nothing to prevent pregnancy. So far I have not had a problem! Am I doomed & overdue, or after 4 years of non-pregnancy, can I go on as usual? Have you any horror stories of unwanted pregnancy, or are you still a virgin?"
Now... which advice would you give Franz? :?

LMFAO.

I do alot of work on computers and I wouldn't plug onto the internet without having at the very least an up-to-date virus checker. I've seen things like the blaster virus get on a computer within 10 seconds, viruses spreading across networks at freaky speeds. Plus you dont know if you have a virus until its too late, many of them do major damage that only a complete wipe of the hdd will fix (zerotrk, a format doesnt always do it).

I use VET anti virus, one of yearly fee. Had 4 updates in one day once, busy day :D

AVG is a good free antivirus, have a look at it. Adaware is a must too, shop record for spy ware is about 1100 items :D
