Hello,
I'm writing a novel mostly set in Tokyo, and at one point, a character takes a job at a café/bar. I have not been able to find any information on whether it is customary (and/or legally required) for the employer to provide a uniform in such a situation, or if employees must buy their own uniforms.
Of possible relevance is the fact that this employee is unusually tall, so a ready-made uniform would probably not be available. One would probably have to be custom-made.
Also, the novel is set in 2006, so recent changes in custom or law would be important.
Thank you for any help.
