I'm wondering since when the Samurai era ended in Japan and are people still allowed to carry swords around in Japan or only in a certain part of the places? :?

you can carry them around in california as long as they are out in the open e.g. strapped to your back.

You know if you do some research on the internet you can probably find the answers to these simple questions yourself. ☝

^dont know where to search

Timsam: Because ancient japanese samurais carry them around and since its like a tradition maybe other ppl still do it

Let's be nice, now. We're happy to answer any questions you might have about Japan, but "people carrying swords"(!), that is kind of funny. :giggle:

Lol Japan is not the Wild West. :D It's not allowed to carry a samurai sword unless you have a permit and registered at the police.

From what i've read you can carry swords around but they need to be in a proper bag and you can only do so if you are going to or from some kind of training like iaido. Some of the bags i've seen reminded me of musical instrument bags or sports bags like hockey. Not sword shaped at all. You aren't really supposed to show the swords in public. You certainly cant walk around with a sharp sword (or a sword at all i bet) in public..like down to the shops or something even if it is registered with the police.

i could be wrong though, but common sense tells me you wouldn't get very far trying to walk around with a sword like a samurai. 🙂

Round about るろうにけんしん (rurouni kenshin) ;-). If you've watched that anime they had just brought in laws restricting the carrying of swords but there were still 'samurai' types around.

Yes I know that, but we are in the 21st century, the Japanese carry briefcases instead :)
Just was a little suprised at the obstuse nature of the question.

edit-

Bollocks, I think I misunderstood. When I think of 'carrying swords' i get the picture of some guy walking around in hakama ready to kill someone. didn't think of the martial arts relation

Late 1800's, about when the Meiji Era began.

WEARING of a sword is illegal in public (in private its ok, but thats not wearing a sword per se, ie. practicing Iaido etc). When you are CARRYING one around its in a cloth bag just to keep it from being bumped, losing it etc.

Why do people go on about ninja and samurai like they still exist?

2 days ago in Oslo i think. some guy struck another in the head with a katana, in the middle of a crowd... i think he survived

Pretty bad swing i say...

Was something last month about a boy in america stabbing his father to death with a training sword (iaitou i think, looks like a katana but cant cut, still can stab)

An American boy stabbing his father with a sword? Weird.

In the past, there are cases of Japanese boys hitting their father with a
baseball bat. Culture swap?

... because you don't have the death penalty in Oslo?

Well, when the Meiji Era began in Japan, the samurai were basically seen as traditionalist barbarians. If you've seen the Last Samurai, you've seen how the Meiji Royal Police cut off the hair of a samurai. Nobody was allowed to carry swords, and the samurai class itself was destroyed in 1871. Nevertheless, today, some people have licenses to carry them. Hope I helped;

Dont Make Fun Of Her/Him!

I too have wondered this on many occasions but have never really had the answers and this guy/girl comes in here asking a serious question and you mock him/her for it it really does not say much for your maturity on how to deal with such topics quite frankly i am dissapointed.

Actually, the police used sabers up into the early part of the 20th century. They didn't always carry them, but they were standard police equipment.

Because its a tradition that should go on forever..Well, that's what I think. Also, I say the westerners are bad going to japan like that in the 1800's and ruined one of japan's major tradition =\

Ever wondered what those traditional sword wielding Japanese got up to that isn't generally found in Anime? I'm guessing it wasn't always so much fun for those on the pointy end.
