I've had nothing but good replies on this forum so far, so figured I'd come to youse again with another question. :)
Could anyone recommend some books (in English) that deal with the history of Kyushu over the course of the Meiji period? I'm particularly interested in it's history around the events of the Boshin War and the following decade.

I know this is a bit of a specialist request, but I just haven't found much in English beyond some general histories that cover the whole country. It would be great if there was something a bit more detailed on Kyushu itself, particularly as some fairly important events of the time (e.g. Satsuma and Saga rebellions) happened there.

I guess that most English literature on Kyushu in the Meiji Period is tied to Saigo Takamori, so this biography might be of help:
  • Ravina, Mark, The Last Samurai, Wiley 2004
Another one I recommend:
  • Hillsborough, Romulus, Samurai Revolution, Tuttle 2014
It covers the role of Satsuma in the Meiji Restoration and depicts Saigo's estrangement from the imperial government.
