Book on Japanese Society...

"Chrysanthemum and the Sword" (Ruth Benedict) used to be the "go to" text for an good introduction of Japanese culture.
For a bit more historical background, I liked Inazo Nitobe's "Bushido; The Soul of Japan"
"The Japanese Today" by Edwin O. Reishchauer (former US Ambassador to Japan, and all-around Japanophile) should also be good.

Gonna look at those books, thanks Majestic. I think it's important to learn about the culture while learning a language. And it's just interesting.

For quick and fairly practical reading you could also try Culture Shock! Japan.
