Hi folks. Well I sold my scooter so now I'm back with soon to be a bicycle. Been hitting the bicycle shops for a touring bike that I can carry on a train.
Need some suggestions now.
1. I prefer the smaller base wheel fold up type, but for 70000 yen plus options, I'm going to have to pass on that one. It's a name brand and I think its made in America.
2. After doing some shopping I still don't know if I should go for a full size bike. They will run about 55000 yen plus options.
3. What kind of emergency tools should I carry .
4. I intend to do free camping so if you know any sites, let me know.
5 I'll also be using the train from time to time.
6. I want to do the whole Kyushu tour. I have 2 months to do it this July and August.
7. Also if you know some special islands that I can get to by ferry, that would be OK.
8. Anyone want to join me, I'm in Yamaguchi-ken
9. Need info on the trains, roads and free campsites.
10. Anyone know of a gaijin cycling forum in Japan, maybe I can get a lot of advice from a cycling forum.

been wanting to do this for many years, so lets see what happens

Free camp & cheap campsite information.

Necessary information for tooling.
Convenience store information is essential for breakfast shopping.

Convenience store map.

Road station is available for restrooms and local information.

Wow! Thanks a million.
If you don't mind, where about in Japan are you. And do you do long distance on the bike these days?

I will go touring on a motorbike.
I traveled around Kyushu in the late 90's.
After that, I went touring with motorbikes in Hokkaido, Shikoku, Tohoku, and Hokuriku regions.

Touring map has always been a favorite.
Good restaurants, scenic routes, etc. are listed.

Other,
A common problem with touring motorbikes and bicycles is to reduce the weight of the load.
Problems with recent tooling,
Since I bring a smartphone, a tablet, etc., it is "how to charge the electricity."

Cycling for 2 months through the heat of July and August here. You're a better man than I ...

I know after 8:30 am it is hot as f.. So timing of my travel I will take serious. Along the ocean might have the cool morning and evening breeze, but the heat, yes...

I will bring umeboshi to heatstroke measures in touring.
Before, when I went to Akita touring in summer, I became heat stroke.
It is good to swim in the river when it is hot..
[River pool in Kyushu]

Kyushu also has delicious spring water.

Hey! Wow, that's more information for me. Thanks.
If you got more post them here. I actually can take the train to Shimane and do cycling also. Got information in that area?
I checked out Touring Mapple maps yesterdays. They seem to be a good resource, but maybe most of the stuff can be found free on the Net. What do you think?

Shimane cycling map

I think it is good to go cycling around Lake Shinji.

宍道湖七珍(shinjikoshicchin) Seven delicacies of Lake Shinji.
Seven kinds of typical seafood .(Sea bass, sorghum shrimp (Yoshi shrimp), eel,Hypomesus nipponensis , sirauo, carp, sijimi)

You have been so helpful on this thread. Many thanks.
Now, do you know a website that sells cycling gear at a discount that I can pay for using 7-11 stores?

Amazon can receive it at convenience stores other than Seven-Eleven.
Also, Amazon can receive luggage at the Kuroneko Yamato office.
Rakuten market is the same.

Seven net shopping does not seem to handle bicycle parts.

So basically see what amazon has to sell?

What gear are you looking for?

And it seems Kiwisimon has already given you some good advice here:

What gear are you looking for?

Well, the thing is I don't know what gear cyclist use these days.
What I have bought so far (keep in mind, my bike is on order for 2 weeks and this gives me time to see whats needed).
1. rear flashing red light
2. kick stand
3. bike on train travel bag
4. easy release rear carrier
5. portable tire pump
6. convenient belt straps (Daiso stuff) ones that stretch with velcro

That's what I have so far.

It really depends on your priorities: if you're on a tight budget use Amazon Japan or compare prices here:

Otherwise, consult/befriend your LBS and buy there.

For Odometers and flashing lights look at CatEye products.

Thanks Thomas
One thing about using the local bike shop is that he gives me fair prices, then he'll have a customer coming back and also he speaks enough English to get by with. But I like the idea of comparing prices and seeing what is available.

Carrying a bicycle using a train or bus for cycling is called "輪行(Rinkou)".

Search using "輪行(Rinkou)" as a keyword.
How to "輪行(Rinkou)"

Equipment such as bags

We say "tan" when we go out in the sun for a while. Like suntan.

Really, your stuff that you are posting is so good.
You ever make it to Yamaguchi ken, the beer or coffee is on me.

Yamaguchi always passes when returning from Tokyo to Fukuoka by motorbike.
There are favorite places because it uses various routes.

Tsuwano is a favorite place in Shimane.
Tsuwano is an old castle town in Japan.
Because there is a hot spring at the Tsuwano Road Station, it is good for touring breaks.

My favorite in Iwakuni is " 雙津峡温泉元湯憩の家 (SoudukyouOnsen Motoyu's House)".
This spa facility is small and old but quiet and very healing.
Also, I fished in the river in front of this hot spring.
And the other is "Irori Bandit Store (Sandband Store)"
いろり山賊 錦店 (山賊砦)
This is a flashy restaurant that suddenly appears in the countryside.

I like 瀬戸内ラーメン(Setouchi ramen)
