Is it nessasary ?

I wonder if sadness and depression are required for the human brain to function ? It seems like we all go through bad times during our lives. It seems like we get tunnel vision into our own heads and are certain we are alone in our sadness. The way to overcome sadness the best is good human contact, yet we draw inside ourselves when we are hurting. Funny how we may know whats best for us, yet run in the opposite direction to avoid doing it. Sure would be nice to have a working "HAPPY-PILL for those bad points in life.
