Yeah,

I recently was given a bonsai tree, as a gift for my 18th Birthday. I was wondering if anyone can refer me to a site, book, or anything dealing wiht the Art of Bonsai, also is there a place where I can submit a picture, and find out the species of tree I have.

Any Information would greatly be appreciated.🙂

I'm afraid that I can't help Martialartsnovice .... but I would like to join him in his request for info!

I am "in the market" for bonsai right now and would also seek any advice and help I could get ... before I spend many $$$$$.

There! That's two of us!

Pleeaase ...?

As for finding out the species of tree:

I am not sure where you live, but I know that nurseries usually have someone on staff who is familiar with trees. So, you might want to try getting some info from one of your local nurseries on identifying your particular species (specii? Ugh . . . I can never remember how that works) of tree.

As for a book about bonsai:

If you can still find it (used book store or online possibly), Sunset published a great illustrated (I would think most bonsai books are . . . heh) book titled Bonsai: Illustrated Guide to an Ancient Art (Lane Publishing Co.; Menlo Park, California; 1965/1976(!)). Despite being a book that was last updated 30 years ago, I find it to be a concise yet thorough resource for growing and training bonsai. It even has a list of the best times of the year for pinching, pruning, wiring and bending, and potting and root pruning for 38 different genus of trees!!!
I wouldn't want to say that I would . . . uh . . . violate any copyright laws, but if you could not find the book and needed some specific info, perhaps something could be worked out (freely of course!!!). You know, come to think of it, I'm not sure the rules governing out-of-print books . . . hm . . . anyway, I would love to help.

Of course, now I want to get back into raising a bonsai. I quit after a former girlfriend 'killed' one that I had been growing for some time. Sigh. But your enthusiasm is inspiring!!! :) Good luck!

Thanks for the links and notes, guys!

I've also become aware of one or two specialist places here in Vancouver (Probably not a bad place to live in this regard!) - so I shall try to look into them and keep everyone posted. May have to wait until after the holidays, though!

So far, in the desert area I live in. Ive found out that trying to keep tropical plants outside here is plant homocide

if you attach a photo to a post here perhaps we might be able to help.

I had a great little bonsai christmas tree last year, and when I went abroad for a month nobody remembered to water it. I wonder if I can bring them up for charges of gross negligence...

Yeah,

I had a garden when I was a little kid, one problem I hoed down all of my plantings and left the weeds

P.S

I found the local Bonsai society near my house. Its in town more, and I was able to speak with the club members, they said come down and bring my tree with me. They'll help me plan for the year.

The best way to find out what type of tree ur Bonsai is, is to look through a book and compare the leafs. That's what I did when I got mine. Usually the bonsai that are sold in shops are of few types, so I guess ur might belong to one of those types. The three typical types that I know from name are: ficus ツ… (whatever the ending, but I guess you could tell if it was a ficus) serissa and sagaretia. Those are easy to look after and available in most shops for not that much money, so check whether your Bonsai is of this type. If not good look with ur search :)

Bonzai Tree

I started a bonzai tree before I went on vacation, and the people who were taking care of it watered it to death. :( I'm planning on starting a new one.

🙂

I want to see a new art of Bonsai by anyone other than Japanese.
Bonsai reminds me of my died granpa. He had much space only for Bonsai next to his house. It had a half size of tennis court. I thought, without the area, I could play baseball.

Yeah, I had my Bonsai Tree for about a year, and when our house sitter came to water it, she watered it to death,

I have two bonsai trees...one is doing wonderfully and the other is looking sad. The leaves are turning yellow and falling off...it doesn't look healthy! I am not sure what the problem is and I don't know what kind of tree it is. Maybe the leaves are supposed to fall off! I'll have to check all the links etc that have been posted and maybe I can find it. I'll attach a picture tomorrow and maybe someone will recognize it!

I just love how the trees look. It's like having a forrest in the house. They make me feel peaceful. The cats however want to eat them and that stops the peace in the house as I chase cats around. They can chew on my cat safe plants but the trees are a big no-no!
