This might be a bit of a dumb question, but for more I've searched I couldn't find the answer. 😌

I was reading a bit on Oda Nobunaga and eventually bumped on Hideyoshi Toyotomi. I kept reading on him as I found it very interesting, yet everywhere I came across Hashiba Hideyoshi. Searching on roots, and his half btother also seemed to use both Toyotomi and Hashiba.
Could anyone tell me why the change of name or... why both are listed as their last name?

I'm very curious about that. Thanks in advance!

Konnichiwa Countess_d-san!

Could anyone tell me why the change of name or... why both are listed as their last name?

In Japan, Family name is the symbol of the ruling class. But Hideyoshi is a farmer and he had not his family name. He get his First family name "Kinoshita" when he serve Oda Nobunaga as Samurai. And He change his name whenever he is promoted, "Hashiba", "Fujiwara" and "Toyotomi".
Changing name is the proof of promotion in his life. 😌

it would be nice of you if you share your opinions about 3 distinctive characters, i.e., Oda, Toyotomi, and Tokugawa after you finish reading the book.
