Grats to our little community as we seem to be growing at an exponential rate. Less than a year ago when I joined there were what, only 750 something if memory serves? Nice. Cheers to the community!

*Fires up the George Foreman to feed 3,000*

It's grillin' time!
👏🍾👏

Growing very fast indeed ! We are like a little village now. From 10.000 we'll be an internet town of its own right !

I recentlly added to the population too! I moved from a small insignificant site to this site lol. I had baaaad neighbors at the other site, you guys are good people!

Whohoo 3,000 population!
👏 😄 😊 :smoke: :giggle: 🍾 :hanabi: 😄 Wheeeee, party!

👏 👍 👏

Yah, I love this forum so much!! Seriously, there are some really great ppl here, and I love how evil ppl are handled! If someone ever says anything intentionally offensive they get their bums KiCkEd!! :D Also, everyone here is a Japan-freak like me so I blend in. 😊 lol, and I've also learned so much about Japan + it's culture from these forums. It's you guys that really helped me fall in love with Japan. Thank you!! 🙂 🙂

i remember that, i like how its alot more active now as well. good job everyone.

Now that explains our monthly bandwidth consumption... 😌

Btw, this number does not include the hundreds of members I pruned because they never responded to their confirmation email.

Anyhow, cheers to our magnificent team and our wonderful members!

Excellent job pruning Thomas, but you missed a few spots...lol

I was the 149th person to join. There has been a little growth since then...lol

The forum is great and I don't know that I could ever go to another. Keep up the good work, Thomas and Twisted and all the staff.

2964. no im not a stalker, you take 573 off of your user id number, the reason for the differences is the number of members that thomas has pruned due to not replying to confirmation emails. there were only 100 or so when i joined at 740 something.

and it will only work for recently joined people because the pruned number goes up all the time.

Good point jeisan, ask Thomas for a truely acurate number. Twisted might also be able to help you. They are the forum Admins. They are the only 2 with the ability to prune and should have the numbers of pruned people.

The word prune has such a bad stigma, doesn't it. Kinda like the word relationship.

Gee, thanks for the heads-up. I can rest easy now... What tipped you off? The fact that it says "Admin" in their titles under their Avatars each time they post? I'm pretty sure Jeisan knows who the Admins are without you having to spell it out...

Over 3000 registered members, but in fact only 1750 posters (at least one message) and barely 350 members with more than 10 messages posted.

Is there any statistics of the members who have been active (posted or browsed the forum) for the last 3 months ?

I wouldn't be surprised if there were less than 200 active members with more than 10 posts.

But all this is already exceptional in itself. No other Japan-related forum in English has ever done better. There is however one in French that beats everything in quantity (though not in quality). It's Nihon-fr with over 4600 members. The most startling of all is that they already have 112.000 posts, against 37.000 here and 33.000 at ****** Gaijin, the 2nd biggest English-speaking forum about Japan. There are to my knowledge more forums about Japan in French than in English.

And that does not mean that French is such an international language, just that French people are much more interested in Japan than the average (maybe 10 or 30 times more numerous) English speakers in the world. How comes ?

To my best knowledge, there are no detailed stats available. However, it should be possible to query the database for such info.

I wouldn't be surprised if there were less than 200 active members with more than 10 posts.
The same things occurs on other boards where a small and dedicated minority is active, while most other users either lurk or just sign up to view attachments or to ask where to download song "xy".

Nihon-fr is an interesting forum, they are a lot into J-glamour girls and bikini-clad tarentos which is one reason for their popularity. Descending into "sleazedom" is definitely no option for JREF (not that I accuse any of the pages Maciamo mentioned to be sleazy, lolol).

I personally think we are doing pretty well, considering the fact that this page started in 1999 as an amateurish hobby site. Well, it's still a mere hobby, and yes, it is still amateurish, but if recent trends in traffic and bandwidth consumption prevail we will have to find a more professional hosting solution.

Anyhow, back to work, ehm, hobby! ;)

"Descending into "sleazedom" is definitely no option for JREF..."

Crud... so much for my Master Plan...

*OOPS*
Did I say that out loud?
*RUNS*
:)

@Iron Chef
thank you for coming to my defense gus, but that was a bit harsh. i wasnt even offended because while its obvious i know who and what thomas and twisted are, some of the newer members may not...

@samuraitora
i think you may have misunderstood me. i can find out the current number of pruned people anytime i want, without bugging the admins about it. the number i gave to neptunemoon was from the day i posted it so it only will work for members who joined about the same day she did. it was sort of a disclaimer on my part. getting a number from when i joined would present a problem. i doubt anyone, including the thomas and twisted, knows the answer anyway.

Of course JREF is doing pretty well. As I said, no other English-speaking site beats it in members and number of posts, and it is evident that all sites have more inactive and little active members than dedicated ones. ****** Gaijin only had about 120 members with more than 10 posts !

As for Nihon-fr, I think its discussion are usually puerile and based too much on video games, anime, manga, J-pop and idoles than on serious stuff. The part about Japan itself is almost insignificant. But if you are in games, manga and idols (and French-speaker) then it's great. Another very popular French forum is Forum Japon which has just had a facelift. It is the antithesis of Nihon-fr. Most of the talk is quite intellectual. Some find it even too elitist as people are rated on the pertinence of what they write and get points and credibility accordindly.

My concern about JREF is that in the last few months, although lots of new members have joined, most topics have become anime-manga or J-pop related. I don't know if that is "sleazedom", but I don't like it so much when I see 100 new post a day and 90 of them are about pop culture or asking how to get free Japanese books or where to download MP3's.

What about creating some kind of rules about the content like they have just started on Forum Japon. They have a FAQ with all these questions new members always ask and consequently, people are invited to check it first and not ask the same questions again, otherwise their messages would be deleted.
