Hey guys! I've had a chat with a Japanese friend recently about the use of 別に

In class we've been taught that using 別にかまいません、かまわない is a way of saying "oh I don't mind, I don't mind at all" but my friend has told me that if you were to say 別にかまわないit gives the impression that you don't care.

I'm guessing its context sensitive but I'm really curious. My Japanese friend said she often tells her sister not to use 別に so liberally because it can be kind of rude?
よろしくお願いします~!

「別にかまいません 」よく若者 がいいそうな言葉かな??

特に会社ではこのような場合に, 上司に「別にかまいません、別にありません」を使うと常識を疑われる。

But "betsu ni" alone I think is fine for "nothing," "not particularly" etc... :)

I don't think 「別に構いません」 or 「別にいいですよ」 is impolite.
But it sounds rude to say only 「別に」, especially when pronunced like 「別にー」 with "に" lengthened.
