Hiya,
1. 学生とそのホストファミリーのためのパーティーもあった。
My translation: "There were also parties for the exchange students and their host families."
The positioning of その in this sentence struck me as odd. The usual "those"/"the" didn't seem quite right; does it have the sense of "their", as in my translation?
2. まゆみはただ泣いているばかりだった。
My translation: "All Mayumi did was cry."
Does ただ just combine with ばかり to reinforce the "all she did was..." sense?
