I'm making a farewell card for one of my Japanese friends who is leaving to go back to Japan. And on the front, I originally wrote さようなら, (his name). But then I remembered seeing it written as さよなら. So I changed it to that but now I'm just confused. For this situation which one should I use. Does it even matter?

Thanks in advance.

(My bad. This should be in the Learning Japanese section. Wasn't concentrating.)

They are both the same. さよなら is probably more common.

But originally it is さようなら or 左様ならば which means well then if that's the case which implies "I better get going".

I moved. :)

Both can be used. さよなら sounds more colloquial than さようなら.
Just to write "his name へ" is another choice. さよなら / さようなら seems too "strong" (as if it's a permanent separation), just in my opinion.
