what i'm asking is i know how to use こ, そ and あ in terms of speaker/listener distance, but what about those which 'cannot be seen', like その時 or こんな事? how do i know which one (こ/そ/あ) to use? and did i ask the question in japanese correctly?

is almost the same as "this" or "such" and easier to understand than そ and あ.
It is used what the speaker is going to show to the listener or what the listener is going to see/hear soon (or sometimes something they are seeing/hearing).

e.g.
Have you ever heard of a story like this?
Have you ever heard of such a story?
(Then the story follows...)

This is my dream.
(After a speech on something, for instance.)

Both そ and あ can be translated as "that" but the meaning is different.

Somthing that the speaker has in mind.
The listener need to ask what the speaker refers.

e.g.
I did not expect something like that could happen.
(Then the listener feel like to ask what "that" incident is.)
I want to be someone like that.

Something specific, the very thing, that particular, etc.
Both the speaker and listener shares it, and both of them know what is being referred.
Maybe it is closer to the pronoun "it" than "that".

e.g.
I've already heard of that story several times.
Don't say such a thing!

Two friends are talking about films.

I'm a bit confused... I learned that ano is used for things known of both parties... and sono if one party doesn't know... in case of locations at least... (there was an example where the daughter had a date, and the parents knew the restaurant "ano mise", but the brother didn't and they switched to "sono mise" while talking with him)
