Founded in 1773 by the Hiromatsu family (広松家), timber merchants in Tosa, the company specialised in sake brewing in 1845. The name Tosatsuru (土佐鶴) was taken from a waka poem by Ki no Tsurayuki (紀貫之) in his Tosa Nikki (土佐日, Tosa Diary):

'Look over, and you will see the pine trees in full bloom, and the cranes that live in them will be like the cranes of a thousand years ago'.

「見渡せば 松のうれごと 棲む鶴は 千代のどちとぞ おもふべらなる」

Miwataseba matsu no ure-goto sumu tsuru wa Chiyonodo chito zo omo fu beranaru

In Europe, Tosatsuru has been sold in France's leading luxury gourmet shop, Fauchon, since the 1970s, and a number of local Japanese restaurants sell Tosatsuru. For many years, Tosatsuru has been the main brand of the company, which now also produces and sells Tosa no Yuzu Shochu (土佐のゆず酎), a yuzu liqueur made from deep sea water, and Ryoma no Kaientai (龍馬の海援隊), an authentic shochu. The brewery is known as one of the oldest sponsors of local television station Kōchi Broadcasting Co. since the days of its Saturday 10 am slot (now simultaneously networked with Saturday Drama) for historical dramas (時代劇).

Let me start by saying we were very tempted to rate this five stars--outstanding sake, and considering the price for an 一升瓶 (Issho-bin), a 1.8l-bottle, we couldn't think of a better bang for your buck.

It has a mild and refreshing nose of green apples and carries a slightly weak and smooth attack with an almost creamy texture and a deep flavour of mature apples, pears and a potpourri of berries—bitter and spicy mid-palate with a mild finish.

You won't regret buying that Issho-bin! :)
