Meiri Shurui Brewery in Mito, Ibaraki Prefecture traces its origins to Katō Sake Brewery, founded during the Ansei era (1855-1860). In 1950, it changed its name to Meiri Shurui K.K. In 1952, the company developed Ogawa yeast, better adapted to eastern Japan's colder climate and used by many sake breweries in the Tōhoku area. In 1977, Ogawa yeast was standardised by the Japan Brewers Association (日本醸造協会 Nihon Jōzō Kyōkai) as yeast #10 (10号酵母 10-gō kōbo). On 14 February 1998, the brewery inaugurated Besshunkan (別春館) Company Museum. Meiri Shurui produces sake, umeshu, shōchū, vodka, gin, and liqueur.
