Gotō Shuzōten is in Takahata, in the Higashiokitama District of Yamagata Prefecture. It was founded in 1788 and is currently run by the eighth-generation owner. The brewery produces mainly junmai and junmai ginjō using rice grown by contracted farmers: Dewasansan, Tsuyahime, Kame-no-o and Yamadanishiki produced locally in Yamagata. Small-lot production and Yamagata's natural blessings ensure the excellent quality and great taste of Gotō Shuzōten's sake. Its flagship brand Benten was named after the goddess of music and performing arts, Benzaiten (Saraswati), one of the Seven Gods of Good Fortune. Benzaiten has traditionally been worshipped by musicians, dancers and other artists.

Sweet nose with floral and fruity notes of strawberry and pears. Clean and crisp mouthfeel, viscous, fruity flavour with slightly bitter notes. Spicy tingle on the finish. Vivid and elegant.
