Nagahama Castle was built in 1575-76 by Toyotomi Hideyoshi in the village then called Kunitomo, later renamed Nagahama. The castle was later demolished and partly used in the construction of Hikone castle. The current ferroconcrete castle has been reconstructed in 1983.
