What's new

Why am I studying Japanese?

I've been asked that; especially by my Korean friends... ;) Answer? Well, I have this interest in Japan at a cultural level; modern (pop) as well as the Japanese reverence for tradition.

Language is the embodiment of a culture. Through language we learn to communicate between cultures and traditions. The more we know, the better we become as citizens of the world.

We're not alone here anymore and the time when an entire people could live in isolation from others is long over. We must learn to communicate and through that process build an appreciation for what other cultures bring to the dialog.

My goal is to be fluent in Japanese in about three years. How? Well, for starters I study for about 2 hours a day. I attend language classes every Saturday morning and I keep a wide range of materials at hand.

Sure it's ambitious, but no more so than when I set about learning to program in c# (I'm a recovering software developer)... [well, recovering might be the wrong term. I'm still a software developer...] ;)

So, ya, I'm interested in Japan because of it's people, their culture, their way of being in the world. Learning a language is the first step in building a deeper appreciation of a society.

Work hard, learn lots and live to the fullest!
