Yes, I think starting from simple structure is a great basic and very essential step.

As I mentioned during the session, listening to songs, drawing new structure and phrases and applying what you learned from them is very instructive.

I've been an American pop/rock fan since childhood and learned a lot about English from songs that the teachers weren't able to teach us in class.

That reminds me of this one time in Junior highschool English class. We were to write a short essay-type thing about our classmates, and I wrote about this girl, a tennis player, who never washed her wrist band (for good luck). There was this sentence in my essay ; "She don't wash her wrist band." which was clearly incorrect, but I argued with my teacher siting a song I was listening to at that time which featured this line, "She wants to lead a Glamorous Life / She DON'T need a man's touch!".
