Nakameguro Hachiman Shrine

Nakameguro Shrine (中目黒八幡神社 Nakameguro Hachimangū-jinja) is located in Nakameguro, Tōkyō. It is unclear when the shrine was constructed, as all records were lost in fires. Judging by the age of the trees surrounding the shrine precinct, it is assumed that it was built in the Kanbun era (寛文, 1661-1673) when the Tokugawa shogunate encouraged the construction of Hachiman shrines in rural areas in order to promote harmony and unity among farmers through the worship of Hachiman, the guardian deity of the Minamoto clan.

The present shrine building was completed in 1936. The shrine has been famous since ancient times for its twelve kagura (神楽, ceremonial Shintō dance) performed every year during the annual shrine festival in September.

The deities worshipped at the shrine are Amaterasu-Ōmikami (天照大御神) and Hachiman Betsumei (誉田別命).

The two photos below show Sazare-ishi (細石). Originally, sazare-ishi referred to small pebbles; today, it usually refers to rocks fused from small stones and stone fragments to form massive rock formations consisting of a calcareous conglomerate. Sazare-ishi are found in Shiga and Gifu prefectures. The lyrics of Kimigayo (君が代), the Japanese national anthem, describe how a rock (巌 iwao) grows out of small stones and is gradually covered by moss. The origin of the lyrics is believed to be in Ibigawa in Gifu Prefecture, where Sazare-ishi Garden, a natural monument, is located.
