Hokkaido 2020: Nemuro Peninsula

Hokkaido Trip 2020 - Day 5: Nemuro Peninsula

Day 5 was a journey from one peninsula (Shiretoko) to the next (Nemuro), then to the volcanic lakes in the center of Hokkaido, and unfortunately, a detour back to Asahigawa where I had forgotten my cellphone recharger.

Nemuro Peninsula (根室半島) is on the eastern side of Hokkaido and stretches about 30 kilometers into the Pacific. My destination was Cape Nosappu (納沙布岬), the easternmost point of Hokkaido where the Sea of Okhotsk and the Pacific meet. The closest Russian-controlled island, only a rock, can be seen from the cape.

Lake Mashū (摩周湖 Mashū-ko) is a volcanic crater lake in Akan National Park. It is one of the deepest lakes in Japan (over 200 meters deep) and one of the clearest. The water is said to be transparent to a depth of 40 meters. Lake Mashū is connected to the larger Lake Kussharo, another caldera lake.
