What's new

Captain of the Ship

It's amazing how little control one has over one's life.

From the little things, such as what you buy at a store, based on availability, to more important things, such as one's job.

I remember several years ago I found myself in the awkward position of facing the reality of unemployment in a foreign country. That was certainly not my choice, but events conspired to rob me of my job at the time, and I had no choice but to adapt to my circumstances.

Today I woke up to find myself in a horrible mood, one which once again did not come about by any choice of my own. Today's mood is nowhere as important to my general well-being as my job was (is), but it got me to thinking about life and how much we influence our own lives and how much outside forces influence our lives.

It's an old, tired topic I suppose, but nonetheless one which I find interesting.

I'll be writing more about this in the future, but for now, I will take an active part in my own life and decide to go to bed early tonight. Hopefully tomorrow will find me in better spirits.

But who is holding the strings?
Often times the irony is.. we are! Some people can manipulate their lives to their own benefit, others become tangled. Some hang themselves.

Just hang on there! be strong! never give up! love yourself and love your wife/husband/kids/.... Live strong because you only live once in this world

Life is full of unexpecting circumstances. It's just the way it is. The important thing is how you handle it and whether you allow the circumstances to control your life or you, yourself, control the ciurcumstances.

If life suddenly hands one lemons when they were expecting peaches does one complaiin and say how unfair life is and become despondent or does one take those lemons and make lemonade out of them? That is the key.

If one awakes in a bad mood for no apparent reason, do they say they have no control and go about their day with a cloud hanging over their head taking it out on everyone? Or do they say, "I am in control of my life and emotions, not the other way around!"? If a person is in a bad mood and remains that way it is because they choose to be.

I read once that the position a person finds their life in at any given time is the sum total of every single decision they have made in their life up to that point. The important thing to contemplate here is, were those decisions based on emotion with feelings of uncontrolability and dispair or, were they based on intellect with the feeling, "I am in control regardless of what life gives me"?

I believe that is the key point of survival and staying sane in this crazy world of ours.
