What's new

Blogroll? Is that like a spring roll? Egg roll, perhaps?

It's been a while. It's good to see that Thomas and JREF are still around. The place has changed a bit since I frequented the hallowed halls of JREF, but it looks nice. It's nice to see all that mojibake from some years ago has been cleaned up. ;)

So in the seven years since last I posted here (has it really been that long???) a lot has happened. So in no particular order, I moved to New England, changed jobs, got married, bought a house, got Covid 19 (once), hurt my finger but got it mostly fixed, visited China, and became filthy rich. It may be possible that one of the above events is slightly (or even grossly) exaggerated. I'll leave it up to your imagination as to which one it might be.

My dream is to visit Japan again some time in the next couple of years. It would be nice to introduce my wife to such a large part of my life. For her part, she'd like to go, but we have to line up the funds and the vacation time to make it happen. Usually we either visit my family or hers for vacation, which doesn't sound like much until you consider that my closest family is half a country away and hers is literally half a world away.

Yes, I married a Chinese Canadian, who then also became a Canadian American, so now she's a Chinese Canadian American. It's actually quite an interesting combination. Sadly she's much too private for me to share much about her life on such an open arena. But the important thing is that we're very happy together (right, hunny? Hunny?)

I tried to post this entry under "blogroll". Not sure what that means, but it didn't seem to fit anywhere else. However, JREF had other plans. It said I was required to attach at least one file. But wait, it still wants "at least 1 image attachment". Hmmm.... ok, then....as soon as I can find a photo to go with this. What kind of a world is it when even journal entries require avatars?

Later...keeping in line with the Nature category, the photo I attached is of a whale of unknown species jumping out of the water off Cape Cod. Oh yeah, we went whale watching, too.

Hope everyone is well and continues to remain so!

It's a good place to be. It may not get the traffic it once did, but Thomas should be proud, nonetheless. There's just something about JREF, you know?

So many of my JREF family have vanished over the years. Always great to see an ol timer return. I think a third of my Facebook friends are former JREF members that I have been lucky to still keep in touch with.
Hey Hey Hello GIF by Everdale

Welcome back, Mikawa! I'm happy that life's been good for you and your family. :)

The other day, I found an old photo depicting what I believe was a jolly get-together we had with Maciamo somewhere in Shitamachi in the early 2000s. Raised glasses of beer and all that.

Blog roll, egg roll, spring roll, I guess we have to think of something less millennial. 😅

I was looking through all the members that I follow, and I think they're almost all gone from JREF. It was a nice blast down memory lane, but kind of sad, too. I hope they're all doing well.

Maciamo! Now there's a name I haven't thought about for some time! I wonder how his European forum is going. Thanks for the welcome back!

As someone who remembers you from the old days -- I used to go by the handle "jt_" back then, but Thomas kindly changed it for me because there was another particularly obnoxious and hateful user posting here with a similar username -- I just wanted to say it's genuinely good to see that you're still around, healthy and happy albeit in non-Japan environs (does your New England move mean that you're now a Maine or Massachusetts Ossan...? ;))

(Also, as someone who was a starry-eyed twentysomething grad student back then, it's somewhat sobering but also strangely heartening to realize that I've reached fellow おっさん status in the meantime... )

I'm taking a self-imposed break from these forums as I deal with lingering physical/mental/emotional health issues, but I just felt the need to send my regards. Hope you'll continue to grace us with your presence from time to time to elevate the level of discourse, bring good vibes, and all those sort of good things I remember you doing.

Hello @bentenmusume ! It's good to hear from you! Indeed, I am now more properly a Massachusetts Ossan than a Mikawa Ossan. But that's an awful lot to type! Never thought I'd be so close to @Uncle Frank 's neck of the woods!

Wait, are you an Ossan Musume? Or a Musume Ossan? Either way, welcome to Ossan status! It's a dubious status, but we have fun. :)

Thanks for the response! Massachusetts is pretty close to where I grew up (though I was on the other side of you from Uncle Frank, I imagine, and also the fact that I haven't been stateside in quite sometime.)

To give you a マジレス in response to this, I'm technically not --and have never been -- a 娘 in any sense of the word, myself. That said, as of two years ago I have a 娘, and have also consumed over the years copious amounts of the brand of sake whose name I've chosen as my current handle. ;)
