I was given an infection in my prostate by a mentally ill gossip spreading evil Japanese woman in my first few months. I also had my hip messed up by a malpracticing chiropractor all in the first few months. I suggested suing him. These rumours spread about town and city hall and I was hated . Unbelievable!!!. I was damaged and the Japanese hate me. Later when I applied to Nova in Tokyo the young kid (HR) there said- " we know about you and don't contact the Tokyo branch as we're in contact with them too." hahahaha
Anyone else heard of or experienced any ridiculous stories like this? This is the real Japan and real JET. Not the one misrepresented by government bodies. Was 19 years ago though.

How would Nova have known about you...?

They would have spoken to my city hall when trying to get a reference. I can imagine it was something like (from someone who never met me in person of course) " Yes, we had big problem with him, always going to hospital, not genki, very strange person. Very bad person, we can not recommend him, always just on time." The young girl working for Nova wouldn't have had the Japanese cultural experience to realise these comments were just some narrow minded, gossip mongering nonsense from a Japanese redneck and consequently would have taken the comments seriously. My leg twenty years later is still injured from the malpractising chiropractor and he is still practising. Apparently 2 weeks is the length some chiropractors train for or at least did years ago.

Out of interest, are you deibiddo who wrote about the legal issues in Japan regarding child access and other foreigner rights fifteen or so years ago?

How can someone give you a prostate infection by spreading gossip? Or did you just choose to express that in an intentionally confusing way?

Implying that somehow "the real Japan" and "the real JET" are these evil, diabolical entities dead set on breaking foreigners and ruining their lives strikes me as very, very, disingenuous and even paranoid. There may be some less-than-wonderful people out there (on JET, in Japan, and anywhere), but what makes you assume that your own incredibly negative experience with JET is the norm and any positive experience must be a misrepresentation?

I was on JET not long after you were, and I was also a prefectural advisor, meaning that I was regularly in contact with over 100 JETs in my prefecture, and I never heard of anything like this. Some people had trouble with their employers, but it was much along the lines of any sort of disagreement/poor relations that you might find among bosses/employees or co-workers at a workplace.

(P.S. Apologies if I'm making assumptions here, but I highly doubt that the poster above is Arudou Debito, who I assume that you're talking about, and who spells his name differently.)

Not confusing ; pretty clear! The girl who gave me the infection (gonorrhoea) then went on to spread nasty rumours about the town as well.

I think my experience although extreme did represent the negative feelings of 'many'. I'm not saying their experience was as bad but for many it was a lonely, disappointing one. An experience surrounded by insular, gossip mongering, boring red necks. I guess many also had a positive experience though.

You say JETs didn't tell you about such terrible experiences, well, they're not going to tell you such sordid stories are they? . These things are embarrassing and people keep them hidden. I didn't go round telling everyone I was given gonorrhoea in my prostate and had my hip messed up as I would have been laughed at.

JETs mostly are immature young kids who have never had a real job. The Japanese especially in the countryside can't be talked to about anything vaguely complex ; they're too narrow-minded.

Thank you for the clarification of your original statement. Your wording at first seemed to imply a causal relationship between the woman spreading gossip and your prostate infection.

I don't doubt that you had a unpleasant time on JET, and I'm sorry to hear that this was your experience. Still, I hope you can see that from the perspective of an third-party observer who does not know you nor any of these people you interacted with, you are making a lot of sweeping generalizations ("mentally ill", "insular", "gossip-mongering", "rednecks", "narrow-minded") that can't really be validated.

I could cite examples of people I knew on JET who made lifelong friendships with people they met in rural areas. Their positive experiences don't invalidate your negative ones, but neither do yours invalidate theirs.

And yes, it was in my job description to help JETs when they had a rough time, so many of them did share their unpleasant experiences with me. I'm just saying that you seem to be painting it in an overly extreme and biased light where the Japanese as a whole are some sort of vindictive cabal, whereas the more likely truth of the matter is that some people don't get along with other people, and the (very natural) feelings of loneliness and isolation that arise can be amplified when you have a language barrier and few avenues to find a sympathetic ear.

I feel bad that your experiences clearly still weigh on you so many years later, and hope you can find a way to work through them.

The girl who gave me the infection (gonorrhoea)
all in the first few months
So you were having unprotected sex with girls in your first few months here? Hmmm.

I think my experience although extreme did represent the negative feelings of 'many'.
I'm glad you put that word in quotes. The word "many" doesn't translate to any percentage at all, and considering how many thousands of JET ALTs there have been since the program has been around (3 decades), I would find it shocking if there wasn't some complaints and bad experiences. But I don't think you represent the norm.

I also find it a bit disturbing that you continue to use redneck and gossiping to describe locals. Oh, sure, many / most JET ALTs get put in the smaller towns, but that's just life.

I think you have the wrong opinion of JET CIRs and other administrators. You seem to have formulated in your mind an image of everyone around you, including foreigners, as evil or condescending.

ETs mostly are immature young kids who have never had a real job.
And just how old and mature were you?
