Hi there,

I am a graphics designer from Munich and got a Karate Dojo as a new client. I would really like to know the translation of their logo as we stupid westerners often use Kanji without really knowing what they say 🙂: And I want to ensure their correct meaning before I use any of them in my designs. So help would be really much appreciated 🙂:
The Dojo is called San-shu-kan which is said to mean something like "house of three things" and the kanji should be the representation of that. I just want to be really sure before I use them.

Thanks a lot!

Have a nice weekend!

Yes, what you have said is correct. The three kanji in the name are 三種舘. The third kanji just means "house", as you've written (in a figurative, more than literal, sense). The first two are used as a pair and could have any of several meanings, including "three types" or even "three seeds". To know precisely what was intended in the naming of the dojo, it would be necessary to ask its leaders / founders. It could refer to something mundane, such as the dojo offering instruction in three types of martial arts, or something more philosophical, taken, for example, from a specific text admired by the dojo founders. Only they will know for sure, so you will need to ask them if you need more detail in order to do your job.

I've not seen that last character used with a dojo of any kind. Maybe 館 if you wanted to keep the sound "kan," which is used for a variety of buildings (libraries, theaters, museums etc)

It's a variant that used to the norm. It's the same thing.
