Hi all,

I am Canadian and I came to Tokyo 2 months ago with a Tourist Visa and was looking for a job. After multiple interviews with different companies, I found a company that is willing to provide sponsorship for the work visa. My company called the immigration bureau and were told that a change from Tourist Visa to Work Visa is not possible within Japan and I will have to go back to Canada to wait for the CoE in order to apply for the work visa.
I did some research before coming to Japan and found out that it is unnecessary to leave the country while waiting for the CoE, and that the work visa will override my tourist visa when it expires.

My questions:
1. Is it true that I can still get my visa without leaving the country?
2. If turns out I DO have to leave Japan in order to get my work visa, can I apply thru other country's Japanese Embassy ( Hong Kong)?

Thank you!

When you did research, did you get your answers from an official source? If so, you can show that source to your company, and they might be willing to contact the bureau again.

That has not been the case in years. Contact immigration yourself. I don't think this is correct.

20 years ago I came in on a tourist visa and then took a trip to Hong Kong when my COE & paperwork came in to get the work visa. It seemed kind of silly at the time but really it had some logic to it -- you shouldn't be able to get a visa to come into Japan when you are already there.
But as others have said, this may no longer be necessary.

I didn't have to leave the country to switch over, though I switched to a business manager visa.

Much more recent than @mdchachi

I'd check again if I were you.

It changed about 10 years ago.

Hello,

could you please tell us more about this business manager visa? I mean is it like you got a job offer as a manager and they sponsor you for a visa?
