敎(=教)練
kyōren
military drill taught in Japanese school as a class until the end of WW2

Is it the stock of a firearm or something?

My Japanese wife says it doesn't appear to be Japanese but may be Chinese. She can't pronounce it, especially the top kanji, but she thinks this combination means something like "teaching". Who knows? Maybe it's a label that labels this gun as something for training use. I have a Chinese student who can look at it, but if the language is something old style from that era, I can't promise that she can translate it accurately.

Actually, 敎 is the traditional form(tell your wife 旧字体) of 教 which used to be used until the end of WW2, just like 萬 vs. 万 or 藏 vs. 蔵 in this thread as you might remember.

教練 is Japanese. The rifle would be used in a military training class.

Thanks for this. It reveals a pretty interesting history for this old rifle.

Thanks, Toritoribe. I told her, and she said what she always does about this sort of thing, namely that she is too young to know that older form of the language.

Fishing for compliments, maybe?

When I mock one of my Japanese friends for not knowing very basic elements of Japanese history, he says, "I shouldn't be expected to know that. It happened before I was born."
