Hello.
please check if my English-Japense translation here is correct. I'd appreciate it so much.

In the following decades, a great deal of effort was devoted to understanding the crystallography, phase transitions, and the optimization of this family of materials [6].
その後何十年か、 多大の努力がこの材料類の結晶学、相転移、そして最適化の理解につぎ込まれた[6]。

Is it right to use 最適化 in this context?

Here's my second attempt:
その後の何十年間で、この材料類の結晶学と相転移への理解を深め、またこの材料類をどうやって最も効率的な利用をす るのかを知るために大量な努力が注がれた。
 
The second one is better than 最適化, except a misuse of a particle; この材料類をどうやって最も効率的利用するのか

I would use 最適な利用法.

Unlike your first translation, the last one doesn't mean "the crystallography, phase transitions of this family of materials" or "understanding of the optimization" either. Which do you want to say?

Really, I thought what I wrote was the same, only in a different form. I want to translate what the English phrase says. That is, understanding the crystallography, phase transitions, and the optimization of this family of materials.
 
I mean "understanding the crystallography of this family of materials, understanding the phase transitions of this family of materials, and understanding the optimization of this family of materials" or "[understanding the crystallography and phase transitions] and [the optimization of this family of materials]". Your first and second translations mean the former, whereas your last translation is the latter.

You want to say "[understanding the crystallography of this family of materials] and [understanding the phase transitions of this family of materials] and [the optimization of this family of materials]"?

Yes, that's how I understand the sentence.
 
Do you have an instance of the materials or more detailed explanation about it? 材料 doesn't seem to be a good translation of it to me.

The only problem would be 結晶学への理解 part. 結晶学上の理解 or 結晶学的(な)理解 is more appropriate, I think. (Thus, it would be better to change the order of "crystallography" and "phase transitions" for the natural flow of the words.)

Prior to World War II, mica was the most common ceramic dielectric for capacitors, although porcelain, steatite, cordierite, and rutile were also used. Capacitors based on titanium dioxide (rutile) were available commercially around 1926. The 1941 discovery of barium titanate [5] with a dielectric constant in the range of 1,000, about 10 times greater than any dielectrics known at the time, focused attention on the barium titanate family of materials for a range of wartime applications, including capacitors (Figure 4). In the following decades, a great deal of effort was devoted to understanding the crystallography, phase transitions, and the optimization of this family of materials [6].

What if I omit the へ?Instead, I translate like this:
その後数十年間、この同材料の 結晶学と相転移の理解、また同材料の最適な利用法に 多大な努力が注ぎ込まれた。

Thanks for the explanation. "This family of materials" clearly refers to the barium titanate family in the context, so I would use (この)チタン酸バリウム類 for "this family of materials".

結晶学の理解 has the same problem, too.

Sorry, I've found another problem in 利用法に努力が注ぎ込まれた. It should be 最適な利用法の解明に多大な努力が注がれた or something like that.

Could you give me the full sentence? I don't know how to translate understanding the crystallography, phase transitions, anymore. Let me try it again, anyway. This is another way I can think of.

その後数十年間、 このチタン酸バリウム類 の結晶学の理解、相転移の理解と最適な利用法のために 多大な努力が注ぎ込まれた。
