Hello, was wondering when I should learn katakana, as I just finished learning hiragana via Genki 1. Should I read the text whilst learning katakana? I'm really eager to learn, so I'm just wondering what would be best.

I never did get around to studying katakana, believe it or not. I mostly picked them up from context.

There is no harm in your going ahead and learning them now, if you wish. I can't imagine it would interfere with your studies using Genki.

I never studied it. I found it pretty easy to pick up since so much of it is used for English loan words. Add to that the fact that half are similar to their hiragana counterparts, so you can guess a bunch without studying.

I studied it, I memorised it in 30 minutes.

Plus you need them for learning kanji anyway.

Many kanji like 多 功 are all made up of katakana.
