What's new

What are you reading at the moment?

Re-reading Golden Oldies !

"THE LAST COP OUT" by Mickey Spillane 1973 . Too new for me; I like his 1940's books better!

I finally finished Scandal by Shusaku Endo a couple of months ago?

Definitely one of the best books I've ever read. I strongly recommend reading it.
Does it revolve around Japanese-Western cultural conflicts related to religion? I vaguely remember that from Silence back in college, but he also wrote a lot more popular stuff later on.....

No, this is different. This isn't the usual Shusaku Endo book. It was written near the end of his career. Well, I am not that great at giving reviews, so I'll put what's on the back of the book:

In the tradition of Dostoevsky and Poe, Shusaku Endo gives us a moral and psychological thriller of confused identity. Suguro, a venerated Japanese novelist, winner of major literary prizes for his distinctly religious work, hovers over an abyss--the end of his career--when he is besieged by rumors that he has been spotted frequenting the peep shows and porno houses of Tokyo's red light district. He is compelled to question his own moral character--not to mention his sanity--even as he discovers the existence of a sinister doppelganger who seems determined to undermine his reputation.

That does sound very intriguing, knm, and most likely highly autobiographical if he's still dealing with theology and writers.

Yes, that's the feeling I got immediately. It really is a good read. I'm going to read it for a second time as soon as I get finished reading Requiem for Battleship Yamato.

I'm reading "Lost Japan" by Alex Kerr atm, but just finished "Memoirs of a Geisha" by Arthur Golden. Also flicking through Edwin O' Reischaur's "The Japanese" from time to time.

I'm reading "Vadim" by Donald James, having read his previous two novels about the Russian ex-cop Constantine Vadim, entitled "Monstrum" and "The Fortune Teller". They're fantastic and I recommend them wholeheartedly!

The Art of War By SUN TZU, very good.

P.S Why is my post count 92? If i recall, it was 199.

Lonely Planets by David Grinspoon

This book has become my bible. Even though he's talking about a lot of scientific and speculative things, I'm surprised that he often seems to be describing my beliefs about God and religion. Plus he does it in such a conversational, humorous way.

I've been reading quite a few Japanese books recently since I discovered the wonders of the massive chain used book stores (book-off, book-one, nichibei, etc.) where I can pick up just about any book I want for 100 or 200 yen. Just finished Norway no Mori by Haruki Murakami and am starting "Harima nada Monogatari" by Shiba Ryotaro.

And in the bathroom, I have a copy of Noam Chomsky's "Hegemony or Survival" that I got for my birthday. Going through about 3 or 4 pages of that a day, depending on my er....well you know.

Johnothan Strange and Mr. Norrell. SUCH A HUGE BOOK x_x
but it's all good. I recommend it to anyone that likes Harry Potter and refuses to admit it.
(it's like HP for adults)

i just finished The Chrysalids, very good book.

now i am reading Ozzy Osbourne's biography for a project T_T since i cloud not find anything on gackt...it's quite boring...;;;;

Isn't that a bit disrespectful for the class of such writers such as Chomsky?

Just finished volume four of the manga Les Bijoux

Hmmm, that's not really reading, more like cartoon strips :p

Myself I'm still stuck on the basic writings of Nietzche, no time at all for some leisure reading :(
need to finish it fast, library wants it bak

Trust me, when you get dialog boxes with text as small as it gets in Les Bijoux, it's definitely reading. But, to please you, I'm about to start The Crow: Hellbound 👍

I was reading "The science of Discworld". Quite disappointing, however - the Discworld-sidestory seemed quite half-assed, and the other stuff was nothing what I didn't already knew 😌
I'm now starting to read "What if...", a collection of stories by several authors about what would've happened if history would've happened a little different...

Well, as Duo pointed out, I hope Chomsky doesn't visit this forum, as he would be upset if he knew he was "bathroom-material." :D

For me, I am still reading Don DeLillo's book "White Noise:"

White Noise captures the particular strangeness of life in a time where humankind has finally learned enough to kill itself. Naturally, it's a terribly funny book, and the prose is as beautiful as a sunset through a particulate-filled sky. Nice-guy narrator Jack Gladney teaches Hitler Studies at a small college. His wife may be taking a drug that removes fear, and one day a nearby chemical plant accidentally releases a cloud of gas that may be poisonous. Writing before Bhopal and Prozac entered the popular lexicon, DeLillo produced a work so closely tuned into its time that it tells the future.

We should start a philosphy club within the forum :p, or at least a section or smth

yeah nietzche is pretty amazing, i read this small thing on his life though, and it seemed he had a pretty lonely life, and even had syphllys :(

anyways, next I plan to read a bit of Antonio Gramsci's works, seeing as he also has albanian roots 😊,and maybe get bak to plato

Well, if he didn't want peopleto read his book in the bathroom then he shouldn't have gone dividing each chapter of his book into convenient 3 or 4 page sections that take exactly the right amount of time to read while using the facilities. He has no one to blame but himself for that.
