Hey! This is a little embarrassing, admittedly. I'm going over the N2 Kanzen Master kanji book and I've encountered the following sentence:

私が、今日在るのは、すべてあなたのおかげです。

The answer key suggests that this is correct. However, isn't 在る the age old verb taught in Genki I's grammar section (ある) which is supposed to be used exclusively with inanimate objects?

ある can be used also for animate things when describing it objectively/abstractly.

ある【有る/在る】
5 (その存在を客観的、抽象的なものとして捉え)人が存在する。居る。「昔々、おじいさんとおばあさんが―・りました」「異を唱える人も―・る」

Incidentally you may also hear いる used for vehicles (I guess because there are people inside, maybe?)
駅にはタクシーたくさんいるから、大丈夫!

Oh dear... When will the learning stop :D
