Kazuo Ishiguro wins 2017 Nobel Prize for Literature

I was curious about his Japanese language ability, given that he lived in Japan until age 5 and continued to live with his family after leaving, and that he is a gifted author in his second language. It turns out that his Japanese is not at a native level. When he came to Japan for a promotional press conference a few years back, he only spoke in English and needed a translator for the questions asked of him in Japanese. At the end of the press conference, he apologized that his Japanese was not good enough.

I hadn't heard of him before, I'll have to check out his work. Does anyone have a recommendation of where to start?
