My grandfather served with MacArthur during the pacific War. I also knew a lot of old men in my neighborhood who fought against the Japanese when I was a kid. The stories they told of Japanese brutality were horrific. The Empire of Japan committed horrific war crimes against American POWs. Even hours before the Japanese surrendered American POWs were beheaded.

I first went to Japan in 1997. My boss was in a competition and I was assisting him. My grandfather's brother told my mother to tell me not to go to Japan. That they were the cruellest people and like to torture dogs to death for fun.

But I fell in love with Japan, its Culture and cuisine. I have been to Japan 6 since and have been all over Japan. Yeah, I got some bad looks but the Japanese I met were very good to me. I considered Japan a second home.

But I got to talk with native Japanese and they really don't know of the war crimes it committed, didn't know Pearl harbour was the reason for the war, why other Asian Countries really don't like them, etc.

The Japanese people in general are beautiful people. I blame the Government. Through their Denial, they keep the hate alive and the Japanese people uneducated.

Look at this site and do a google for "Japanese war crimes" to find more information.

Japan is a funny place. Japan has the highest percentage of sex slaves in the world, had child porn banned only a few years ago, prostitution on the streets, Pacciniko parlours everywhere paying out cash and they lock up people for years on minor drug charges.
I love Japan but I do believe their government needs to reform. Otherwise, China will swallow up Japan within a decade...IMHO

The US is a funny place, too. Where female police dress up as a hooker & talk a guy into coming with her & then the guy gets arrested. Where the state is allowed to look into ordinary citizens' library records. Where they call their country the "Land of the Free" but lock up people for years without trial, or even charge. I could go on, every country has its peculiarities.

The highest percentage of sex slaves in Japan, are you sure? I thought, that would be Thailand.

Locked up years without trial? Not U.S citizens. Maybe you're referring to the british and the accused ira suspects?

yes, Japan is the leader in sex slave trade. i read it in an english newspaper in japan.

I referred to Guantanamo.

Regarding sex slaves, maybe you mistake overall prostitution for human trafficking? In Thailand exist some 150,000 non-adult sex slaves, with a total of 400,000 AFAIK.

The supreme court gave Guantanamo prisoners the right to be represented and have trial about 2 months ago. Maybe you didn't hear that? I don't know how the media is in Germany but if you are getting info from the bbc I can see why you wouldn't of heard that.
They are enemy combatants and not U.S citizens.

Regarding sex slaves in japan, I read that in a japanese (english) newspaper (Dailey Yumori..something like that)
Heres one link, you can google for more

2 months ago, but what about the years before? Maybe you didn't hear that? I don't know which media you rely on, but if you are getting info from foxnews I can see why you wouldn't of heard that..

The BBC is actually one of the best news sources around.

From your paralumun link: "It is estimated more then 75,000 women are working as prostitution slaves in Japan."
That number would be the lowest estimate I've seen for non-adult sex slaves in Thailand alone. I don't think, Japan is the worst in that regard. There are several countries doing worse. The US, for example:

"UNICEF estimates that a million children are brought into the sex industry every year. The industry of child prostitution exploits 400,000 children in India (UNICEF 2003), 100,000 children in the Philippines (CATW), between 200,000 and 300,000 in Thailand (Oppermann), 100,000 in Taiwan (UNICEF 2001) and in Nepal (ECPAT), 500,000 children in Latin America, and from 244,000 to 325,000 children in the United States. If one includes children in all the sex industries, the U.S. figures climb to 2.4 millions (UNICEF 2001). In the People's Republic of China, there are between 200,000 and 500,000 prostituted children. In Brazil, estimates vary between 500,000 and two million (UNICEF 2001)"

Fox News has never been charged and proven guilty of false information like the BBC.
Years before?
I'm not here to agrue with you. I can see you're anti american like most Germans. I don't get that after everything we did for your country. And I love how Germans are so self proclaimed Rightous when only 60 years ago they committed the worst crimes against Humanity. Oh wait, it wasn't Hitler, It was Bush! LOL

Ok, Enough about sex slaves. Can we get on topic about Japanese War crimes?

Call me anti-American too, if recognizing the simple fact that the US did detain hundreds of people at Guantanamo, without charge, without trial, and largely without access to counsel.

Have you ever asked yourself the question "Why Guantanamo and not somewhere else?" If you haven't, give it a try.

And people can be held as a "material witness" for very extended periods. A very large number of people were rounded up and held as such in the aftermath of 9-11.

Bossel does need a clarification on the policewoman thing, though. While the woman can pose as a prostitute, the potential customer (the "john" in US slang) must be the one to solicit the act of prostitution. Otherwise it is known as "entrapment".

Then why don't you start a thread about Gitmo? This thread is a discussion of Japanese War crimes.

And those held in Gitmo are enemies of my Country. A LOT of the detainees have been released. My Country was Attacked and we are at War. Look back and see what happened during other wars.
Again, we can discuss this, just start the thread. Did you open and read the link I posted?
Lets stay on-topic.

I just thought that I might add this link in this thread:

BBC News | ASIA-PACIFIC | Japan apologises to South Korea
(About Koizumi apologising to Korea) --This is a big step!!

Sorry it is from BBC, Kochisho, but I have to agree with Bossel that BBC is a trustworthy news source..
Just because it is critical to some ideas does not mean it is a bad news source.
In fact, all news sources have political opinions and are biased in some way or another....which can be seen from the links you provide:
koreanews, paralumun, and the comments from Hilton in JapanToday.

This is a very unethical and hateful commment kochisho. And also very irrelevant.

In fact, Tokyo War Trials and Japan War Crimes are subjects we all know about, and I agree with you that Japanese did terrible things to Koreans and Chinese during WW2.
However, do NOT single out the United States as being the ONLY good country in this context, that is: Tokyo War Crimes Trial.
IN FACT: The Koreans, the Chinese, and the Russians wanted to have put Unit 731 (a group which conducted biological experience on the Chinese during WW2) on war crime trial too, however, the United States government said NO, and headhunted the Japanese scientists to Washington...This is not something one would call righteous??or???

1) we have lots of those already
2) Flame Japan, don't expect everyone to agree
3) demand clarification on a claim against you, you will get it
4) What does Hitler have to do with anything and what have "you" "done" for germany?

Yep, I know. That's why I remember it. It was in a documentary 2 or 3 years ago. They also said, that it was illegal police tactics in most US states. They actually showed a female police officer dressed up as a prostitute & doing this. The officer was aware of the camera & even gave explanation. The "entrapped" guys had to pay a fine & then had to attend some "class" for re-education. I don't remember, though, which particular state that happened in. Sorry.

Ah, I see, foxnews again!? Actually, most Germans still view the US as a friend of Germany. But just like me, most are anti-Bush.

And I love how Germans are so self proclaimed Rightous when only 60 years ago they committed the worst crimes against Humanity. Oh wait, it wasn't Hitler, It was Bush! LOL
No comment! Miss Apollo & Mac said it all.

Ok, Enough about sex slaves. Can we get on topic about Japanese War crimes?
No problem, but if you want a focused topic (hard to achieve anyway), you should stay on topic in your own starting post in the first place.

New Rule !!

You have to be over 60 and had a Japanese person personally (eyeball to eyeball) have done something to you during wartime before you can talk about it on this Forum. I know, never happen! Maybe we should have a special Forum section for negative comments that you can only see if you click on it. I want to go on believing Japan is heaven on earth with everything peachykeen and a pure history; oh well, guess not?

I don't get the internet. You voice one opinion you get condemed..LOL

I'm not bashing Japan. But its in Japans best interest to re-establish friends within Asia. To do this they have to admit and apologize for it. Thats my opinion. You can have another one without the hostility and attacking my Country.

What has the U.S done for Germany? Are you serious? W/O the U.S East and West Germany would of been soviet. We protect German for 60 years. Reagan broke the Soviets resulting in one free Germany and Berlin.

I'm not here to agrue with anyone. just to discuss. I really loathe internet tough guys.

Bush will win, troops out of Germany and Korea and move them to friendlier Countries like Poland! Love the Polish. =D

actually, if you look at it that way, without the U.S. Germany might have been a superpower conquering most of europe and smacking the russians upside the head with little shovels going "deutschland" *bonk* "テシber" *bonk* "alles" *bonk*...

wouldn't have been as good for the jews and the rest of us, but what does that have to do with anything, right?

my point is you can never say what would have been, had it not been for X.. thats all based on biased opinions.

Attacking your country? If anyone here attacked the US, you have been attacking Japan (I presume)?
Really, I don't want a fight either. But take a look at your 1st post & then tell me, what was worse that anyone said about the US than what you said about Japan.

Reagan broke the Soviets resulting in one free Germany and Berlin.
Reagan said "Tear down this wall!", but he didn't do it. The Communists defeated themselves.

I was never bashing japan, just pointing out facts/ What asia country has relationship with Japan? None. I was discussing the source and solution. I don't need you to tell me i was bashing anything while I wasn't?

Communist defeated it self? Ever hear of the arms race?

This is not at all fair to Japan, nor does it make much sense. Sure not many Japanese know the details of their countries past aggressions, but how many Americans know about the horrors their government inflicted on Hiroshima, Nagasaki, Vietnam, Cambodia, etc etc? Can you imagine the furor if I said something like:

"The American people in general are a beautiful people. I blame the government. By their denial they keep the hate alive and the American people ignorant."

As for the issue of sex slaves, your information has already been proven wrong. Pachinko may be tacky, but compared to American social problems like gun violence, racism and drug addiction it pails in comparison. Japan does have problems, but so does every country in the world. Saying that because Japan has a sex trade, pachinko and a general lack of knowledge of its history among the people it is going to be taken over by China (which likewise has a thriving sex trade, gambling problems and a general lack of knowledge of its history) is just ludicrous.

kochisho said:

Actually, I beleive that North Korea is the only Asian country which doesn't have relations with Japan. They don't have relations with the US either though, so what is the point?

Hey, why do people always pounce on Nazi Germany and Imperial Japan (by no means am I approving of what those two states did), but ignore the atrocities committed by leftist totalitarianisms like Stalinist Russia, Maoist China, Khmer-Rouge Cambodia? Why do the right-wingers always get the thick shaft while the left-wingers are just ignored? Is it okay to put people in concentration camps, unjustly murder them, and make their lives miserable for the sake of the workers and homeless?

My two cents. :)

To this, kochisho replied:

kochisho said:

Although, it is off topic, I must clarify here:

YEs, Bossel is right, the communists defeated themselves by getting weaker and weaker and the people making a revolution against the Communist regimes in Eastern European countries.
Remember, Ronald Reagan never ended the Cold War, he only made good diplomatic relations with the Soviet Union. The communists liberated themselves...it is in the textbooks.

Remember, the CIA never predicted the fall of the Berlin Wall NOR did Reagan.

Yes, we all know of the arms race:
From 1945(the beginning of the arms race, to the escalation in 1950s and 1960s the detente era, and in 1989, the end of Soviet hegemony over Eastern Europe DUE TO people's resistance...not due to Reagan.

I 1989, one communist regime fell after another. In Warsaw, on 4 June, the communist regime was humiliated by Solidarity Party in the first semi-elections since WW2, in Budapest, 12 days later, Imre Nagy was given a proper funeral after 31 years after his execution.
In Berlin, the same year, the Wall fell. (9th NOvember)
With 9th October, an month earlier, East Germany had its own "Tiananmen Square", in which more than 70,000 East Germans rioted against the East German government, and Egon Krenz (political control) decided not to use force. See, the PEOPLE! And....Reagan was not there.
.....The list goes on....It was the people who liberated themselves!

Don't think there is any conspiracy at work here. It has nothing to do with any left/right distinction. In the US, German (and to a lesser extent Japanese) wartime atrocities are so well-known and documented because The US fought a massive war against those countries, uncovered the evidence of their atrocities and tried and convicted those responsible for them. Russian, Chinese and Cambodian atrocities may recieve relatively less attention because the US has never been at war with them and there has never been any need to propogandize their bad behaviour. Well, there has been some need to do it, but not as much. Plus most of the millions killed by Mao, Pol Pot and Stalin died of starvation and disease as opposed to being gassed or burned alive in ovens like the Nazis did. Not that it would make much difference to the victims, but saying millions were gassed to death is much more headline grabbing than saying they were starved to death. Additionally, Stalin and Mao didn't deliberately set out to kill millions, most of the deaths were the bi-products of land redistribution schemes which interrupted the food supplies and led to massive malnutrition among some segments of the population. The Nazis, on the other hand, deliberately set out to exterminate an entire religious group from the face of the planet, an act of barbarity which really sets them out from the rest.

Another point about: what have United States done for Germany (and rest of Western Europe)????... (kochisho points this out hinting that Bossel (from Germany) can't have his views because the U.S. helped "him"/Germany out after WW2 and should be thankful).
Well, of course the United States helped out with Marshall Plan from 1947/48, created the OECD etc.....which was a good thing. This was a good deed.
HOWEVER:
Remember that: The French and the Spanish have done a great deal for the United States by helping out in the War of Revolution of 1776 against Great Britain...And the help of the French and Spanish was important!!

Being anti-Bush and anti-America are two different things kochisho.
I know we should stick to the topic, but your posts are not all relevant either.

****, the internet tough guys are out in force.

I'm not saying every Country is perfect. I just wanted a discussion about SOMETHING I"M STUDING NOW. Which is Japanese war crimes

Save your attacks for when you get balls to come at someone somewhere else besides the internet. I was never rude to none of y'all.

And i'm a history major and believe me, the people in the communist states didn't free themselves. LOL but thats another subject

SO, you are a history major? I was aswell. Now I teach.
I don窶冲 want a fight in this forum, but I just did not like your comments to Bossel about Hitler. This was rude.

Reagan did have a role in the collapse of the Cold War, you are right, however, the people in Eastern Europe did have a revolution.
There were also long-term couses of the collapse of communism in 1989.
For example:
economic troubles in the Soviet bloc.
West Germany, w. Willy Brandt and Ostpolitik and consequences for the Eastern bloc.
The second Cold War 1979-
Reagan窶冱 military build-up.
Reforms within the Communist parties.
Dissdents/protest movements
Solidarity Party w. Lech Walesa in Poland.

Surely, as a history major, you can窶冲 ignore these events as important in the collapse of communism?
Reagan did play a role with his hard-policy toward USSR, however, these above-mentioned facts did have a role too.

Different paths of change in 1989:
Gradual concessions: Poland, (solidarity), Hungary.
Quick collapse: GDR
Palace coup: Bulgaria
Violent overthrow: Romania
------
Okay, if you are studying Tokyo War Crimes Trials..(which is an interesting topic), what do you think about Unit 731's escape of trial? Let us discuss!! :) In a peaceful atmosphere...otherwise the thread will close.
Or are there anything mroe specific you want to discuss? Because from previous posts, I can see you have already discussed the sex slave-topic, which has nothing to do with the Tokyo War Crimes Trials...

I don't have time to write a long responce (going crabbing) but I like to respond a little.

You mention solidarity. Who do you think help organize, support and keep this movement alive? It was a joint plan between the vatican and the reagan white house. The liberals at the time were screaming communist would never fall and we should leave it alone and concentrate on a nuclear freeze. Thank God they were wrong

The Japanese sex trade is just an example I used. I read it in a Japanese newspaper and I shouldn't of brought it up.
There were a lot of experiments commit by the Japanese like Unit 731. None of it should of been gone unpunished.
http://www.japantimes.co.jp/cgi-bin/getarticle.pl5?eo20010605a1.htm

And whoever mentioned Horoshima don't understand something. The Japanese believed the emperor was God and they should die rather surrender for him. The U.S Army landed in Saipan and the japanese military told told the residents to kill themselves rather then surrender. They did by jumping off cliffs as the american came. Japan WOULDN"T surrender. Hiroshima is a horror reminder of war but it did save lifes in general for both sides. The Emperor finally took the American offer to surrender and negotiated his life for it. Thats why he went unpunished.

OK, wish me luck. I hope to catch many jersey blue crabs. Yummy!
