I just found out about the Google Books Ngram Viewer. It looks like it has been around since 2013, so it didn't exist back when I needed it.
You can use it to see how common words and phrases are in books published in a certain language. For example, here I compare 'having been working' 'having worked' and 'after working'. Please note that you need to be careful in how you interpret the results. Context can make a lot of difference.
