Which would be used?
1) I tried to communicate with her in English but I couldn't.

All others are fine. You're well into the range of all being used and it just depending on the individual.

Frankly, I'd say grammar is probably not the weak point if people are having difficulty being understood at this level.

5) I would rephrase as, "Communicating with her in English was in vain."
