こんにちは皆さん、
In a textbook I am reading there is a conversation between trainee and a japanese person.
研修生: この本屋は文法具も売っていますね。
日本ではどこの本屋も同じなんですか。

日本人: いいえ、本屋によって違います。

What is the grammar behind どこの here?
I get the feeling that it means in comparison to other book shops in japan.... or is this typical of japanese bookshops?

よろしくお願いします

It's どこ の 本屋: "the book store at what location". The question word + も pattern is used here, resulting in "bookstores at all locations (in Japan)".

文法具?

文房具?

ここの本屋も、そこの本屋も、あそこの本屋も、東京の本屋も、大阪の本屋も、都会の本屋も、田舎の本屋も xxxxx.

PITA.

Remember that question words aren't just for asking questions. They also serve as placeholders indicating what sort of info they are replacing. どこ for location, for example.

X の本屋も Y indicates that for any variable "x" then "y" is true. So no matter what location you substitute for どこ, Y stays the same.

Wrap your head around this thoroughly, because it is common and useful.

だれにも言ってはいけない
金がないから週末はどこへも行けない
なにも食べたくない
いつでも遊びに来てください
どんなに頑張ってもダメだ
どれだけ勉強しても上達は見られない
なんと言ってもダメだ
今日まだなにも食べていない
いくら説明しても通じない
いくつになっても子供が可愛い
飲み物ならいくらでもあるよ
選択肢はいくつもある

This also comes up in variants with か

いつか海外へ行ってみたい
どれか選んで
玄関にだれかが来ている
どこか行きたい
どこかの本屋で買った鉛筆だ
風邪がいくらかよくなった
夏休みに本を何冊か読んだ

Etc etc etc

The commonality and usefulness of this cannot be overemphasized.

thanks lanthassan,
I should have remembered that. I think toritoribesan has picked me up on this before.

I think I would probably go with 何の魚でも or どの魚でも, but I think you got the overarching meta-idea of the question words functioning as placeholders and that's the main thing here.
