The latest numbers from the Japan Tourism Agency are in.

Total number of visitors: 31.192m visitors
Total amount spent by tourists: 4.5tr JPY

Each visitor spent an average of 153,000 JPY during their stay.

Broken down by nationality (JPY per capita):

Australia242,000
Spain237,000
Italy224,000
China224,000
US191,000
Asean153,000
South Korea78,000

To reach the government's goal of 8tr JPY in tourism revenue, each tourist will have to spend at least 200,000 JPY per stay. I reckon the relatively low expenditure of Korean tourists can be attributed to the fact that they usually take weekend trips to Japan. It would be interesting to know how many days the average tourist spends in Japan.

The Australians coming for the skiing? Surprised to see Spain and Italy higher than China.
