Hi,

I know I have asked about という before; this is another example where I feel uncertain about its exact purpose. How would the meaning change if という was removed?

Another perennial favourite of mine. Who is the subject of 思っている? The speaker? James? Snape?

Why やらせて and not simply やって?

1)
The meaning is the same in that case. It is originally for quotation, and gives a nuance of "objective view".

2)

It's Snape. As in the thread linked below, the speaker can't be the subject of 思っている. If the sentence is just James is the subject.

3)
He is talking about the things the father was asked/made to do (e.g. exercise).

Thanks Toritoribe, the original English for (2) is "I think James was everything Snape wanted to be", but I did have doubts whether the Japanese literally meant that (not that it is such a big deal for the meaning).

なりたいと思っている(/た) is the translation of "wanted" there. When "I think" is added, it's .
