Iwakuni (岩国市 Iwakuni-shi) is a city located in Yamaguchi Prefecture. As of 1 June 2023, the city had an estimated population of 127,512 in 65182 households and a population density of 157 persons per km². Iwakuni is located in the southeastern Yamaguchi Prefecture, bordering Hiroshima Prefecture to the east and the Seto Inland Sea to the south. The Nishiki River flows through the centre of the city. Iwakuni was established on 1 April 1889 within Kuga District, Yamaguchi, with the creation of the modern municipal system. It was raised to city status on 1 April 1940. On 20 March 2006, Iwakuni absorbed the towns of Kuga, Mikawa, Miwa, Nishiki, Shūtō and Yū, and the village of Hongō (all from Kuga District) to create the new and expanded city of Iwakuni. The city also houses the Marine Corps Air Station Iwakuni or MCAS Iwakuni (岩国飛行場, Iwakuni hikōjō).
