Exploring Assertions Regarding Language Learning Resources

Hello everyone,

An excellent, free resource online.
In this blog, I'd like to visit certain statements about learning Japanese and do some research about it:

#1: "Textbooks explain about the -te iru form by using several chapters and many pages"
The information online about this surpasses more than a chapter in a textbook. While this certainly doesn't disqualify textbooks as learning tools, it's safe to assume that websites are as viable if not more viable than a textbook.

#2: "An on-line site is not enough even if it's really good"

I think we'd first need to determine what is implied by "not good enough" vs "good enough" and why it has to be a dichotomy in the first place. I'd argue a more nuanced opinion that certain websites provide enough information about certain aspects of a the language while other online resources don't. I'd further add that considering the vast amount of information available on the internet, it's reasonable to believe that using various websites to gather the necessary help to learn a language is a viable option and should therefore not be disregarded as an alternative to using textbooks.
a) Amount of Information Available:
Regarding more specifically 「~て+いる」 a fairly thorough explanation is available here (forum post) and here (Tae Kim's website). Should that not be enough to understand the concept, google provides plenty of more resources which likely (certainly) provides, in its sum, much more information about the topic than any single textbook ever could. I therefore believe that the above statement is incorrect.
b) A Textbook introduces Vocabulary
To say that a textbook is limited to its grammatical explanation would be narrow minded however. For one thing it provides new vocabulary that is usually used in context with whichever grammatical points introduced in a lesson. Here's an example from Minna No Nihongo:

Interestingly, Tae Kim's website does the exact same thing:

So that's one less crucial difference between a textbook vs online resources.
c) A Textbook provides practical exercises:
Another argument that can be brought up is that a textbook provides some written exercises a student can do to further his or her understanding. Here's an example from Genki this time:

... and Tae Kim does the exact same thing on his website:

So that's another example of something which could be considered exclusive to a website.
d) Textbooks Organize Information
Textbook will organize information in a structure, logical fashion. Here's an example from Genki:

...and Tae Kim does the exact same thing:

Which is another example of something which could be considered exclusive to a website.
Conclusion
Judging from what I've discovered online, I think it's fair to say that online resources are actually "good enough" when it comes to looking up resources about learning Japanese although it might require consulting multiple sources as opposed to just one (a single textbook). I've also just only touched the tip of the iceberg of what's available out there (and constantly updated as I write this sentence). I hope I've provided enough data to disprove the above statement and other related misconceptions abut it.

#3. Dictionary don't usually treat this kind of grammatical issues:
Let's find out whether this is true or not when it comes to hardcover dictionaries.
It's covered in A Dictionary of Basic Japanese Grammar p.155.
It's also covered in other resources which don't identify themselves as "dictionaries" per se.
*
All in all, I think it's important to promote a diverse approach to learning as opposed to limit ourselves to just one.
Thank you for reading!
