The Kyoto City Kyocera Museum of Art (京都市京セラ美術館) is located in Okazaki, Sakyu Ward of Kyōto and was founded in 1933 as the Kyōto Enthronement Memorial Museum of Art. The building was designed by the Japanese architect Maeda Kenjirō (前田健二郎, 1892-1975) and is held in the imperial crown style (帝冠様式 teikan yōshiki), a neoclassical style of the early twentieth century. A comprehensive renovation project was started in 2017 and completed in the end of March 2020, adding the Higashiyama Cube Hall, a glass roof over the inner garden as well as an underground complex under the Main Hall housing a cafeteria, a museum shop and a gallery.
Originally called the "Showa Imperial Coronation Art Museum of Kyoto" in commemoration of the Showa-tenno's enthronement and later "Kyoto Municipal Museum of Art" (京都市美術館 Kyōto-shi Bijutsukan) the museum was recently renamed to "Kyoto City Kyocera Museum of Art".
It displays some 3,700 pieces of art with a special focus on Modern Period Kyoto Art comprising nihonga (日本画, Japanese-style paintings) from the Meiji and the Showa periods, Western paintings, sculptures, prints, and works of calligraphy. In addition to special temporary exhibitions of modern art, the permanent exhibits will be shown in the new Collection Room in seasonal rotation.
