Dear Caster51,

do you mean that the tradition belongs to the Japanese so its value should be judged by the Japanese?

If that is the case, fair enough. But maybe in that case if it is a Japanese cultural thing it should be practised in Japanese waters and not in waters protected by other nations under UN covenant and on the other side of the planet.

Rather awkwardly, I swing between opposing and tolerating whaling.
I think it a tad hypocritical to oppose whaling but not be vegetarian. However much you dress up the meat industry, it is essentially man's exploitation of animals (and before anyone says anything, I eat meat and yes, I'm a hypocrite). Even arguments about free range I find questionable; why give an animal a nice life if in a few months you're going to kill and devour it without a second thought?
I may accept the Australian argument a little more if they also attacked the Norwegian whalers. I wouldn't say it's racism, but definitely double-standards.
